25 reasons why people use Meth

Sfj Twenty-five reasons why people use meth.
I didn't make these up.

This question was given to clients in conjunction with a local treatment facility. These are answers that addicts gave.

Sure, there's a lot more than twenty-five reasons why people try or use crystal methamphetamine. Here's what we came up with when we thought about it.

1. The high. The most obvious reason!

2. The rush. Similar to #1, but more about the thrill as it hits you.

3. The euphoria.

4. The sense of power, or the sense of being powerful.

5. The SEX! For some, sex is synonymous with speed

6. The "freaky sex", going places you would never go without speed. Whatever that means to each of us!

7. The sexual endurance to "take it" longer, harder, faster than usual.

8. To be a bottom. Some guys claim they relax and enjoy receptive anal sex more easily while on crystal meth.

9. To handle feelings of loneliness.

10. To relieve feelings of low self-esteem; such as not feeling worthy of relationships, or other factors that affect self-esteem.

11. To relieve boredom.

12. To cope with depression.

13. The weight loss. Not recommended by any health plan! Crystal meth may curb your appetite. Stimulants like crystal meth cause increases in body temperature that burn more calories, too.

14. To dance all night. Or all weekend.

15. To make the most of leisure time, such as weekends.

16. To stay awake.

17. To help night people to be more like day people. Or day people to be like night people.

18. To relieve feelings of internalized homophobia.

19. To ease social anxiety. Some people choose drug use instead of building or improving social skills.

20. To be part of the club scene.

21. To fit in with people when it seems like "everybody" is doing it.

22. To feel confident.

23. To some of us, crystal meth "brings you out of yourself."

24. To boost creativity or productivity at work, hobbies, art, etc.

25. To do housecleaning or other repetitive tasks.

I think I can help you with that one, Guestwho.

I have known "straight" men who were outright homophobes, except when they used meth. Then they had sex with other men.

I have also known truly straight men who enjoyed anal sex, but only when using meth.

A bit icky and graphic, but I don't know how else to put it.

One more thing: I'm leery of homophobes because I think many of them haven't come to terms with their sexuality, whatever it is.

Always here to help

Thanks, I just don't understand the phrasing of it plus I don't know any homophobes that would take something to make them non homophobes. If they collected those reasons some where besides SF, I am not sure that would be included.

Couple of questions SFJ.

1. Where did you get this information

2. Did you engage in sexual contact with men when you were getting high?

You don't have to answer #2. I am just curious. Just trying to understand this addiction.
Sfj Re: Twenty-five reasons why people use meth.
To dunno80,

As some of you know, I have to be much more careful concerning what I say about myself than what I used to be. I’ve been posting on this forum daily, for well over five years, during my active addiction, initial attempts at withdrawal, rehab, successfully reaching abstinence, recovery, step-work, sponsoring, education and now professional work. I am a substance abuse counselor intern at a local Community Treatment Provider and consequently, I must be more careful, as a professional, regarding self-disclosure. For example, last Friday evening, I went to a CMA meeting and one of my clients was at the meeting. Without hesitation, I got up and walked out of the meeting. I told my supervisor and he told me I did the right thing, actually, it was the only ethical thing I could do.

The questions you asked, have been answered by me, publicly in the past, but I’m going to use a bit more prudence in the future.

I will answer those questions privately if needed.

In other words, because they DIDN'T like how they felt, and didn't know any other sane way to feel better.

Re: Twenty-five reasons why people use meth.
I've known straight men that engaged in sex acts with other men when under the influence of meth or cocaine. I live in Seattle, so it's not like this only happens in San Fran. It's quite common actually, more common that you think.

Re: Twenty-five reasons why people use meth.
A lot of this sounds very familiar. For example, Kyle insists his artwork is much better when he uses. Frankly I don't see any difference- he's always been a good artist. Of course that's just of the reasons he uses, I'm sure.

Well said Loraura- Yep, that be it.
Except you forgot to add one little thing-
feeling different isn't always better

You are so smart...........
Loraura Re: Twenty-five reasons why people use meth.
Yup, sometimes feeling different, even if that is miserable, is still better than feeling the feeling they coudln't change any other way.

Addicts of all kinds have broken cope-ers.

Remove the drug, and the cope-er is still broken.

Fix the cope-er and the need for the drug is gone.

Need is a very strong word. Not to be confused with longing, desire, thought, craving....
