My son is following in my old foot steps
I have been clean now for 8 months. I have 2 boys, one18, and the other 7. My oldest son is a meth addict also. I thought he was in recovery also, but as we all know you cant fool an old drug addict. He and his girl friend are expecting a baby in Oct. When I confronted him about using he told me I was paranoid, and he was still clean. My son and I never used together, but he used to steal my stach, which back then made me more mad than the fact that he was using. Now that I have clean time under my belt I cant help but feel responsible for his addiction. My father is an addict, not meth but he is an alcoholic, and did alot of cocaine in the 80s and 90s.There is a history of addiction in my family. How can I help my son?

Re: My son is following in my old foot steps
I worry about this every day. My 17 year old is a pot smoker - we have the kind of relationship that he can at least be that honest with me - and the idea that the day is coming when he will be using something more than just pot scares the hell out of me. I guess the best way to help your own son is to continue to be the good example that you are today. Congrats on your clean time - I know how hard you worked for that.

Re: My son is following in my old foot steps
Quote:Geez, I feel your pain. I really do. I live in fear daily that my son will follow in my old footsteps. Knock on wood, so far so good. And he'll be 28 this year, and he's married with a son of his own. So we're probably past the danger zone, but then again, I didn't start using until I was 27 or 28. Way too old to blame it on peer pressure. Addiction runs very heavy on my Mom's side of the family, so I do still worry. I'm real sorry about your son, and I guess the best thing you can do is STAY CLEAN, work a program, and be the example for recovery. There are tons of people here on this board who are shining examples for all newcomers. Congratulations on your clean time. It's rough, I do know that, but NEVER GIVE UP, because we really DO RECOVER. I'll say a prayer for your boy, sweetheart. |

My son is following in my old foot steps
I am so sorry to hear about your son but congratulations on your accomplishment, being clean. Honey I wish I knew what to tell you to do I don't know myself with my son. I don't know if addiction is inherited or not but there is addiction hx in my family also. My dad was an alcoholic, my brother is one too. My son's dad smokes marijuana every day of his life and when he was in the Navy 25 years ago he said they used to "shoot up ice water to get chill bumps". I never will understand that. As far as that goes I am a smoker so I am a nicotine addict, which is nothing but a legal drug. Good Luck to you and your son. |
