What makes an addict open up about Meth?

What makes an addict choose to open up about meth use?
I'm curious to know and I guess it could be for any addiction, but a lot of meth users don't tell and they keep it a secret even from people they share a home with. What makes them open up to certain people and not to others?
I understand why someone wouldn't open up, but what makes them feel ok to open up??
I've always wondered why I didn't know for so long and then one day he dropped the bomb on me. Even that story was a lie...

Easy answer - trust.

Addicts don't trust anyone, not even themselves.

Only when they feel there is someone they can trust, an intake counselor at rehab, another recovering addict at a meeting, or someone they feel is absolutely undetached, a therapist maybe, can they allow such a condition as trust to exist.

Trusing a loved one, or someone who shares living space is nearly impossible. Kinda sad huh?

Trust?

Sometimes I consider those who haven't witnessed it in their home lucky.

I can still remember standing in the bedroom doorway BEGGING my husband to put his needle down.

SFJ, should I consider myself 'priveledged' in a way that he wasn't shy about being so open with his use?

Was this some sort of sign of 'love' that he trusted me? Or a sign that he really didn't give a shyt?

This is an interesting topic to me.
Sfj Re: What makes an addict choose to open up about meth use?
That's difficult to tell because I relly don't know him at all and you only through a computer.

But consider how many times you've read a post where a wife or mother or other loved one says something like, "My biggest wish or desire is that he would tell me the truth."
Penel0pe Re: What makes an addict choose to open up about meth use?
Leslie, there comes a point - a low point - in our addiction that some of us just stop giving a shyt who knows. I remember what you were going through back then - addicts can and do get to a point that we don't care about ourselves much, so caring what "You" think is even harder to pull off...

SFJ is right in a lot of ways - maybe your husband trusted that you were going to put up with his shyt no matter what - I guess hubby knows better than that now, eh? Our idea of "Trust" is hardly normal or rational when we get that @#%$ up every day. I was one who was stupid enough to "trust" that no one could tell anyway and that I was getting away with it - now that I talk to people (NORMIES) about how I was back in the day, I know I wasn't fooling anyone. They knew. They just never confronted me about it.

Never forget that a person on meth is NOT in his right mind. That's not an excuse - it's just a sad reality.

Its a double edged sword....they don't know what they are wishing for.

The reason my husband finally opened up to me was because he had been leaving so many drugs and paraphernalia around that he just couldn't deny it any longer.

Instead of staying on the same path of yelling threats and ultimatums, I started learning and even educated him about his addiction.

He was always really honest about the fact that he would not go to rehab, meetings, or anything else where he'd have to face other people.

He wanted to quit, but not recover.

Re: What makes an addict choose to open up about meth use?
i recently had an experience with just exactly this.

I would have to agree to a couple of things that have already been stated. Trusting that you would put up with the bullshit no matter what (yes, I'm sure he got a big surprise when I found out about the relapse) and reaching such a low point, that they don't even have the energy to hide it anymore. It becomes "normal" to them.

At the time of this admission, we were broken up for about 6 months with no contact, and he claimed abstinence for about 4 months ... I say claimed because, within 3 days of the conversation I noticed slurry speech, "cranky" attitude, same "friends" and blame games. 2 days after that I was told by a friend of his that he was doing Cocaine when he felt like partying .... the whole four months of abstinence from meth.

We all know where that leads .... relapse, cuz' the Coke doesn't give the same kick . (So I am told, I've never done meth.)

I also understand that the addict isn't in their right mind. Yes, it is sad. Once they reach that point though, there isn't anywhere to go but up. It's either life or death. THEIR CHOICE.

Perhaps reading about stages of addiction could provide further enlightenment. Try a Google Search.

Much love to you ...

The same reason I tell the whole world everyday.

......you figure, if everyone knows...you can't stumble,
you got no place to fall.
also..

...it's like if you go on a diet..
you ask for support from your family.

it's a lifestyle change, that involves "admitting the exact nature of your wrongs"

the real you emerges, and wants to say...
........."that was'nt me that treated you like that!

it was the "other" me.

I'd like to know what makes an addict freely admit to using to his family and me and still continues to use. Maybe because we put up with it? I remember the first week I knew him, he admitted to me that he did crank. I probably should have left then, but I had no idea what crank actually was. Maybe he might admit it so upfrontly because deep down inside he really wants help, but never will?

....because crank does YOU.

the need for speed...

you know it's killing you, and you WANT to be free of it.

.....but your brain says:
DO IT...you'll feel better, I promise.
........you won't feel like a worthless piece of sh!t
you'll come alive again...
...be the real you! (a lie from the speed side of you)
