What helped you (or a loved one) quit and stay off Meth?

Deeeee917 What helped you (or loved one) quit and stay off meth?
Hello everyone,

Just wanted to get as many answers as possible - What helped you or your loved one quit and stay off meth?

I personally believe that medication and supplements can help with the physical cravings more than anything... I know for myself that exercise, effexor, and multivitamins with extra vitamin B have always helped me tremendously in the past. But I'm just one person out there and would love to hear from the rest of you to see what worked.

Thanks and Happy Monday!
Deeeee

How interesting !

I think that medication did me more harm than good.

This is what I feel worked for me:
Rehab, outpatient, therapy, family support, regular and deliberate 12-step program and step work, hanging out with those in recovery, regular community volunteering, night classes at college, vigorous aeorbic exercise, healthy diet and living, this website, and part-time working for NIDA.

Dee, I hated what I saw when I got clean.
I hated what I had become- that I ever would have gotten so far from who I am.I hated not having logic and reason and real.
That kept me clean- still keeps me clean.

For the cravings, I took Ltyrosine, ate healthy, walked everywhere. That exercise thing is good stuff, it really is.
For the boredom factor, empty nest feeling, I took up gardening- a new addiction to replace my old one.

I agree with the medications doing more harm then good.
But Suppose everyone is different.

I think that the "cravings" are more Mental then Physcial.
Therefore the medications don't serve much of a purpose except for making you still have the feeling that your still taking drugs. In my opinion anyhow.

What helped me was doing ALOT of Stuff that I didnt want to do. That didnt feel natural or normal to me. What Helped me was Surrendering, & Admitting that I HAD NO IDEA HOW TO STAY SOBER - and not admitting that to anyone But myself.
I followed the direction given to me by others who had been where I had been, and who were making in day in and day out with out sticking needles in there arms, or using drugs of any form in anyway ....

And slowly, ohhhhhhhhhhh So slowly there I was ... things began to feel more normal. I felt better about myself... and I was staying sober and have ever since.

Trusting in God (whom I wanted nothing to do with at first), Cleaning house ( working the steps and clearing up my wreckage) - and working with others .... (meetings, and sponsoring - talking to new comers , sharing my story, reaching out to people on the board etc ect etc)

Deeeee917 Thanks so far!

SFJ- I know that in the past you have posted a few good recommendations on books to read re: meth recovery and some other addition books. Do you remember the titles?

Deeeee, Be sure to READ and PRINT OUT the 12 Steps TOOLS OF RECOVERY thread above... It is full of great tips to help keep you clean... ITS VALID even if you are not following a 12 step program... REALLY good advice in there...

This is the one that I would recommend.

I also have a good book list regarding methamphetamine addiction but most of the books are geared toward family members and not necessarily toward the addict.
