Do home drug-testing kits help or hurt teens?

I'm not a parent but I think it could go either way depending on the parent, the child and how the situation is handled.

I think if you're a parent and you even suspect your kid is doing drugs you need to do anything in your power to save them "before" it's too late. They might hate you for it but someday hopefully they will find it in their hearts to know you did it out of love.

Some kids on the other hand will be so hurt by the lack of trust and invasion into their personal space that you might alienate them and push them them to rebel against you even more.

I know a young woman who's parents were "spiritual" (I'll put it in a nice way but...) They dominated her so bad and tried so hard to control her every move in order to keep her "safe" from the world, in order to keep her "pure" from evil. She ended up running away, living on the streets, doing drugs just to get out from under their control. The whole situation may have turned out better if things had been handled differently.

It's a tough situation no matter how you handle it and no matter who you are.

And I'm quite sure that is one of the biggest reasons many kids turn to drugs. But so many parents are too stubborn to realize the error. Parenthood does not automatically come with Sainthood. Quite the opposite in far too many cases. Then they end up on this forum bitching about their kids.

Sorry, I didn't realize that it was considered bitching when, as parents, we come here for help! Thanks, I needed that today.

Thank God I have not registered and have kept my bitching to a minimun.

It doesn't apply to you if it doesn't apply to you.

Remember that please.

And you're right, coming here looking for help does not mean bitching. There's a big difference.

Sometimes kids run away because they can't handle the ugliness at home.

Sometimes they run away because they just don't want to follow rule.

You know, teens can be rebellious. Go figure.

I think maybe Sfj meant bitching as a word often used as "letting it all the feelings out". Please don't take it personal.
I've seen many parents on here, good loving parents, who just have kids that use drugs. Kids don't always know the extent of the damage of drugs until they're dealing with addictions.

I know if my kid got sucked into addiction, I would do a lot of BITCHING, and everything else.

I was strict with my kids, they had hella rules to follow, they were rules to help them SURVIVE in the real world.

I was the queen-nag at one time. I didn't care, when you're on your own and if those lessons didn't teach you something, then complain. Only thing....
My kids have thanked me, told me they now understand. I even got a call from a kid we helped raise, she thanked me for keeping my foot up her ass. I didn't think I was all like that...
But hey, whatever works, she still loves me.

I encourage ALL parents to keep coming here and learning, sharing, and encouraging.

We can ALL learn lessons EVERYDAY. Even the old-timers.
